Kyiv’s Sasha Filipchuk, 9, lost both her hand and her stepfather.

The Ukrainian chief prosecutor’s office reported that since the “special military operation” began on February 24, at least 115 children have been killed and more than 150 injured in Russian attacks on Ukraine. The prosecutor’s office said that these numbers do not simply reflect numbers, but the grief and broken dreams of hundreds of Ukrainian families. The young girl, Sasha, lost her hand and her father during these attacks.

Several days after Sasha’s birthday, her family was forced to flee from Russian invaders. As Gostomel was evacuated, the child’s stepfather died as he tried to drive the family to safety. The girl was wounded, but the shelling of the invading force prevented her from immediately reaching a hospital. Consequently, Sasha and her mother undertook several days of hiding in the cellar of a house in Bucha. The girl underwent surgery at the hospital after they were miraculously saved a few days later. Unfortunately, her arm had to be amputated.
